The YMCA of San Francisco contracted with LFA to design and conduct an evaluation of its Y Be Fit physical education program. Y Be Fit aims to raise the fitness levels among school children in 16 elementary schools in San Francisco, where approximately only one-quarter of children meet the state fitness standard by 5th grade. LFA is creating both baseline and follow-up observational rubrics to measure youth’s progress towards meeting California state physical education standards, as well as assessing children’s knowledge related to health and nutrition. The Y Be Fit program also works with teachers to increase their knowledge of nutritional health and the state fitness standards. LFA is developing data collection instruments to assess changes in teachers’ knowledge.
